The Indianola boys basketball team held Grinnell to just five first quarter points as they dominated the Tigers Tuesday night at home winning 76-45, while the girls couldn’t keep up with the high flying Tigers falling 64-45 on senior night for both squads.
The Indians boys were dominant from the start defensively, going ahead 16-5 after the first and 33-17 at halftime. Indianola would then score 20 third quarter points to blow the game even wider, and emptied out the bench in the fourth. Drew Kingery had an astounding return to home court action from injury, scoring 31 points, Brayden Drea had 16, and Hayden Sivertsen came off the bench late to hit a pair of three’s.
Sivertsen said after the game this senior night was special because of the unusually large senior class of 13 that have stuck together for a long time, and this win was a culmination of their hard work.
The Indians girls fell behind 10-0 to start the game, but rallied back to trail just 23-22 at the halftime break. The Indians fought back and forth with the Tigers, and trailed just 33-31 with minutes to go in the third when Grinnell went on a run that would not be stopped, eventually outscoring the Indians 31-14 the rest of the way. Emily Naughton had 12 points to lead the team.
The boys are now 15-2 overall and 10-1 in the Little Hawkeye Conference, while the girls are 9-9 and 7-4. Both teams host Dallas Center-Grimes on Friday.
