It was a rough night Tuesday for the Pella Christian basketball teams, as they were swept by Dallas Center-Grimes in a Little Hawkeye Conference doubleheader heard live on 92.1 KRLS and on the Pella Christian YouTube channel. The Eagle girls fell to the Class 4A #1 ranked Mustangs 49-17, while the P.C. boys lost 66-34.
Facing the top team in Class 4A, the Pella Christian girls fell behind early and were never able to overcome the deficit. DCG grabbed an 11-4 advantage after the opening quarter, before using an 18-5 second quarter to take a 29-9 lead into halftime. The Mustangs pushed the lead to 42-14 after three quarters and coasted to the 32-point victory from there. The lone Pella Christian girl to score more than four points in the loss was Joslyn Terpstra with 10.
In the back half of the doubleheader, the DCG boys took command early and never looked back. The Mustangs opened the game on a 9-0 run at the 4:26 mark of the first quarter and held a 19-5 lead at the end of the quarter. DCG slightly grew their lead to 30-15 at the intermission, before outscoring Pella Christian 36-19 in the second half to grab the 32-point win. Isaiah Breems was the lone Eagle to score in double figures, posting 10 points in the loss. Eagles head coach J.D. Boer said that he was disappointed with his team’s effort against a good Mustangs squad.
“We just did not have a whole lot of fight in us tonight. DCG is a heck of a basketball team. We were fortunate enough to beat them at their place earlier this year and tonight obviously just was never a close game. They were better than us in every facet of the game. But I think when you talk about the first punch, they just had a mentality about competing tonight of which we did not.”
Pella Christian won’t have long to dwell on the losses, as they wrap up regular season and Little Hawkeye Conference play Thursday night hosting Indianola in a girls-boys doubleheader.
