While many of the major bills remaining in the Iowa Legislature are about changes to education, the other main area of focus this session is on ways to reduce property taxes.

State Senator Ken Rozenboom says he does not serve on the Ways and Means Committee this year, so he’s not as privy directly to ongoing negotiations and bills as they come to various hearings, but he’s been tracking a few different bills that could change quite a bit about the levy structure in the state.

In his weekly newsletter, Rozenboom focused on Senate Study Bill 1124, which is a proposal from Senate Republicans to address the issue.

“SSB 1124 simplifies and consolidates around 20 different levies. It eliminates two different levies because other revenue exists for those services. Over the years, hard caps passed by the legislature have been worked around by some local governments and this bill will reinstate those caps and put more control on spending growth. Finally, it increases voter participation and transparency in bond referenda and debt consolidation. We’ll see how this debate develops and hopefully we’ll be able to provide some help for taxpayers.”
