With the NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Basketball Tournaments set to get underway this week, one former area standout got close to wearing their dancing shoes last week in the Summit League Conference Tournament. Former Knoxville Girls Basketball Great Katie Keitges helped the Omaha Women’s Basketball Squad on a surprising run to the conference tournament championship game after being picked to finished 10th preseason in the ten team league. The Mavericks were the 6th seed and had to win the conference tournament to get in defeating 3rd seed North Dakota State 84-81, then dispatching 10th seed Kansas City 69-60 before coming up short to top seed South Dakota State 93-51. Keitges scored a season high 11 points in leading the Mavericks in the championship contest. Keitges finished her junior season averaging 2.7 points per game, claimed 54 rebounds, had 25 assists and 26 steals and drained 18 three point shots. The Mavericks finished with a 15-17 record.
