Ken Kenyon, Conservation Officer for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources tells KNIA/KRLS about turkey hunting. The season for hunting turkey opens in April and runs through the middle of May.

Youth turkey hunting is the first season and it runs from April 7-9. Season one for hunting runs April 10-13. Daily bag and season possession limit is one bearded or male wild turkey for each valid license and transportation tag issued to the hunter.

Kenyon said, “When we talk about safety, for sure about turkeys, we always want to remind our hunters to identify what they are harvesting before they decide to shoot. So, we always kind of talk to them in terms of making sure you identify the target from the tip of the nose to the tip of the tail. That way you are absolutely sure of what you see before you pull the trigger.”

Kenyon added to wear bright colors when hunting and stay away from wearing white, blue or red so not to be confused with being a male turkey.
