Knoxville will be celebrating Iowa Flag Day tomorrow. The event is scheduled from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. at the Marion County Courthouse Lawn at the Rotary Gazebo.

Iowa Flag Day is a day to reflect on our heritage and celebrate our history. What makes the day special in Knoxville is the Iowa Flag was designed here. Iowa State Flag Day was declared by the legislature in 1998. In 2015 Governor Terry Branstad proclaimed March 23-29 as Dixie Cornell Gebhardt Week in Iowa since she designed the Iowa flag.

Events scheduled for the afternoon include History of the Iowa Flag by author of “My Name is Dixie,” T. Waldmann-Williams. There will be a special reading of the 2023 Governor’s Proclamation, declaring March 29th as Iowa Flag Day.

Also scheduled are Knoxville Middle School students who are finalists in a Flag Day Essay Contest reading their essays. Walk the Historical Exhibit on the Iowa Flag and Dixie Gebhardt and complete the Iowa Flag Day Passport around Knoxville.

In case of inclement weather the event will be moved inside the courthouse.
