It was a busy night for Norwalk Community’s spring sports teams Tuesday as the boys and girls track teams, boys tennis team and boys soccer squad were all in action.

40-YEAR-OLD SCHOOL RECORD FALLS

The Warrior boys track and field athletes competed against five other schools at the Waukee Northwest Invite, where no team scores were kept. Norwalk won gold in three events, but the biggest highlight of the meet came in a second-place performance by the 4×200 relay. The quartet of Jacey Hutson, Landon Hochstein, Skyler Olson and Dillon Ranck combined to break a 40-year-old school record in the event, clocking a time of 1:31.67. The same four sprinters later won the 4×100 relay, missing another school record by just three-tenths of a second.

Norwalk boys coach Matt Ramthun calls the early-season 4×200 time an outstanding feat, noting, “To run that time with a rough handoff in the chilly weather is an impressive way to start the outdoor season.”

Hutson and Ranck finished one-two in the 200-meter dash and Braeden Carlson earned a victory in the 400-meter hurdles. Also placing second was the shuttle hurdle relay. The boys’ next meet is Friday at Winterset.

GIRLS TRACK 9TH at WAUKEE

The Norwalk girls track team placed ninth at the Waukee Invite, scoring 16 points. Ames won the meet with a score of 92.

The Warriors’ top finish was a second-place effort by the shuttle hurdle relay team of Kate Desmond, Juliana Warren, Chloe Martin and Shae Ung. Ung also placed fourth in the 100-meter hurdles. The girls’ next meet is Thursday at Ballard.

BOYS SOCCER FALLS 5-3

The Norwalk boys soccer team hosted Dowling Catholic in Tuesday’s season opener and lost by a final of 5-3. The Warriors trailed 4-1 at halftime, then fought back within 4-3 in the second half before Dowling added the final tally.

Norwalk goals were scored by Caden Endres, Jack Brown and Quinn Scallon. Brown and Drake Stageman both had assists and Jacob Rueber made seven saves. The Warriors’ next match is Thursday at Ames.

BOYS TENNIS LOSES OPENER

The Norwalk boys tennis team was defeated 7-4 in their season opener at Ankeny Centennial. The next varsity dual is Tuesday, April 4, when the Warriors host Indianola.
