Indianola City Council member Heather Hulen resigned at the special city council meeting Monday for professional considerations due to the city taking over operations of the YMCA facility. With the open position, the council will now have several options to fill the vacant spot. The council may now elect to fill the vacancy via appointment, and to do so the city must file a notice of intent to consider, and will take applications from interested parties.

The council may also choose to hold a special election, which will be held at the earliest practical date. The public may also petition for a special election to fill the vacancy. A petition must be filed within 14 days after an appointment is made, or the notice of intent to fill the vacant spot is published. At least 1,000 or at least the number of signatures equal to 10% of voters who voted for candidates for office on the ballot at the preceding regular election is required.

The position is an at-large spot, and is currently up for election this fall. Any appointed vacancy, either via appointment or special election, will fill out the term until the November election winner is sworn in.
