People in the county are asked to report controlled burns. Marion County Sheriff Jason Sandholdt said people should call the sheriff’s office, provide your name and address and just give them a heads up.

Nobody wants a fire call reported by someone in the area where the fire department is called out and the sheriff’s department for a fire that is a controlled burn. The dispatcher will then check to make sure the person with the burn has fire suppression equipment.

Sandholdt tells KNIA/KRLS News, “Obviously it’s smart to do a controlled burn to do a backburn into that so it doesn’t get away and just take their time. I mean it’s obviously depending on the size of the section or some of these big CRP sections you just want to try and take your time and fires do get away and accidents do happen but the more they try to prepare and have the right equipment and have somebody experienced in doing burns there definitely helps.”

He added to be wise when burning, don’t do it on a windy day and be safe doing it.
