On a beautiful Monday night for track and field, the Norwalk boys placed first and the girls team took second in their coed home invitational at Warrior Stadium.

The Norwalk boys won six events and scored in the top three 19 times, totaling 194 points. North Polk placed second with 151 and Dallas Center-Grimes was third with 87. DC-G won the girls team title with 156 points and Norwalk placed second by a 113-110 margin over third-place Carlisle.

Individual winners for the Warrior boys were Landon Hochstein in the long jump, Quillan McMurry in the discus, Jacey Hutson in the 400 and Ben Hanson in the 800. Norwalk also won the sprint medley and 4×400 relays.

Hutson qualified for the Drake Relays with a Blue Standard time of 50.04 seconds, breaking a school record in the process. Hanson, who anchored both first-place relays, broke the two-minute mark in the open 800 for the first time this season. Hochstein soared 21 feet, four inches in the long jump.

The Warrior boys placed second in eight events, including Braeden Carlson in both the long jump and 400-meter hurdles, Maddux Borcherding-Johnson in the shot put, Dillon Ranck in the 100, Donovan Card in the 3,200 and Tony Anania in the mile. Also placing second were the 4×800 and shuttle hurdle relays.

Norwalk boys coach Matt Ramthun was pleased with the team’s overall performance and depth, noting that the Warriors scored twice in all but one event and set several season and personal-best marks.

The Norwalk girls had two champions on the night as senior Bree Mauro won the 800 in 2:24.73 and sophomore Bailey Birmingham won the 400 hurdles in 1:08.48.

Placing second were Jaylynn Brandt in the 100-meter dash, Nyah Hulbert in the 200 and the shuttle hurdle, 4×800, 4×100 and 4×400 relays. Savannah Welch took third in both the 100 and 200 sprints and Kate Desmond was third in the 100 hurdles.

The Norwalk girls will return to action Thursday at the Waukee Northwest Invite and both Warrior squads will compete in Saturday’s Jim Duncan Invitational at Drake Stadium.
