The southwest corner of the downtown Indianola square was evacuated Monday due to the use of a concrete sealant being used indoors. Indianola Fire Chief Greg Chia tells KNIA News the sealant was meant for outdoor use, and the work was related to the repairs on the south alley of the Downtown Indianola Square Reconstruction Project. The safe chemical levels for occupants in a building is 50 parts per million in the air and surrounding area, while the sealant caused not only a strong odor on the square and local businesses, but caused a danger with over 300ppm in the air. Five buildings were evacuated from 10am for the rest of Monday. The Indianola Fire Department and other emergency responders were on scene.
