Central on Wrong Side of Low-Scoring Baseball Game

Despite limiting a potent Buena Vista University offense, the Central College baseball team was unable to find a win Tuesday night at home, falling 3-1.

The Beavers came into the game averaging 9.8 runs per game. In the 3-1 loss, the Dutch held them to their lowest run total in a conference game and to three or less runs for the third time all season. Starting pitcher Sam Staley went seven strong innings, allowing a pair of earned runs on seven hits, three walks and a strikeout. Landon Thiele struck out three in two scoreless relief innings. Hitting in the #9 hole, catcher Brenden Mudd led the Dutch offense with a 3-for-3 day. He started with a solo home run in the third inning and added a double and a single later in the game. The other Dutch hits were scattered throughout the game. Central got runners in scoring positions in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings but could not scratch any more tallies.

Central is set to wrap up the home portion of its conference schedule with three games against Loras College this weekend, starting with a single game at 3 p.m. on Friday.

Dutch Women Secure Road Upset in League Tennis Tournament

For the first time in program history, the Central College women’s tennis team picked up a road win in the opening round of the American Rivers Conference tournament with a 5-2 victory at No. 3 Nebraska Wesleyan University Tuesday.

The only previous wins for the Dutch over a higher-seeded team were in the 2008 third-place match and the 2003 semifinals. Jenna Mitsuko Mahoney and Becca Vala were responsible for three of Central’s five points. The tandem won 8-5 in the No. 2 doubles match. Mahoney won 7-6, 6-1 at No. 4 singles and Vala won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 6 singles. Brianna Lindstrom and Jenna Hernandez won 8-3 at No. 3 doubles. Alli Kreider was leading 6-1, 3-0 at No. 5 singles before her opponent retired and giving Kreider the win.

Central (7-12) advances to the semifinals and will face No. 2 Coe College Thursday in Cedar Rapids. In their first meeting this season, Coe beat Central 5-4 on September 3 in Pella.
