Six Norwalk spring sports teams competed on Thursday, highlighted by a pair of 11-0 dual wins on the tennis courts, a fifth straight victory for the girls soccer team, and a school record in the boys long jump.
Tennis Teams Roll
The Warrior girls tennis team improved to 6-0 by winning all 11 matches at Newton. Three wins featured 8-0 scores: Anya Kallenbach and Madison Haskell in singles play and the doubles team of Sami Aagard and Grace Dehmer. The boys also prevailed 11-0 in a home dual vs. the Cardinals, improving to 5-1. Both teams return to action Monday against Urbandale – the girls in Norwalk and the boys on the road.

Soccer Girls win 5th in a row
The Norwalk girls soccer team scored a goal in each half to defeat Ames 2-0 at Warrior Stadium, improving to 5-2 overall. Junior Addison Burch scored her team-high eighth goal of the season, sophomore Ellie Dueland notched her first goal and freshman Katie Liedtke made five key saves. The Class 2A 12th-ranked Warriors have allowed only four total goals in seven games and will return to action Saturday afternoon at Newton.
Girls Track 3rd at Indianola
The Norwalk girls track team scored 85 points and placed third out of eight squads at Indianola’s Ron Werling Relays. Southeast Polk won the meet with 186 points, followed by the host Indians with 142. Second-place finishes for Norwalk included Kate Desmond in the 100 hurdles, Nyah Hulbert in the 200 dash, and the shuttle hurdle and 4×200 relays. Third-place medals went to Emma Sizemore in the shot put, Ella Johnson in the 100 hurdles, Elizabeth Iverson in the 400 hurdles, and the sprint medley and 4×800 relays. The Warriors’ next meet is Monday at Winterset.
Boys Track 4th at Waukee; Hochstein sets long jump record
The Norwalk boys track team scored 77 points and placed fourth out of 15 schools at the Waukee Relays, finishing behind Waukee Northwest, Waukee and Pella. Only 17 events were scored as the shot put and discus were not held due to wet grounds. The Warriors’ only gold medal of the night came in the open 400, where senior Ben Hanson clocked a personal-best time of 52.23 seconds. Three other Norwalk athletes also recorded a PR, including Landon Hochstein’s school-record long jump mark of 21 feet, 10 inches for third. Dillon Ranck placed second in the 200 dash in 23.18 and Skyler Olson was third in the high jump after clearing six feet. The Warriors’ next meet is Monday at West Des Moines Valley.
Girls Golfers 3rd at Oskaloosa
The Norwalk girls golfers also competed Thursday, placing third at the 11-team Oskaloosa Invitational, held at Edmundson Golf Course. The Warriors posted a team score of 405, finishing behind Washington’s 347 and Winterset’s 396. Norwalk’s Ava Garvey and Ruby Hoch both placed in the top 12, shooting rounds of 94 and 97, respectively. The Warriors will host a four-team tournament today at Willow Creek Golf Course in Des Moines. Tee time is 1:00 p.m.
