Ava Garvey’s nine-hole round of 42 led the way as the Norwalk girls golf team won their home invitational by 20 strokes on a windy Friday at Willow Creek.
The Warriors posted a season-best score of 196 and Carlisle placed second with a 216. Des Moines Lincoln and Bondurant-Farrar were also in the field.
Garvey tied Carlisle’s Fay Zaugg for the top score of the day with a 42, then won a four-hole playoff for medalist honors. Ruby Hoch and Haley Cooper both carded a 50 for Norwalk – placing fourth and fifth after a playoff – and Calissa O’Connor added a 54.
Norwalk coach Steve Wermerskirchen pointed out that Garvey finished her week with a personal-best 18-hole score of 94 at Thursday’s Oskaloosa Invite, then followed it up with her best nine-hole round on Friday. “Ava has really focused on her short game this last week and it has really paid off,” he said.
The Warrior girls will return to action on Monday, hosting Newton in a Little Hawkeye Conference dual meet at Willow Creek.
