Jack Brown’s free kick found the back of the net with two seconds left in regulation Thursday night, lifting the Norwalk boys soccer team past Des Moines Lincoln, 3-2, in a match played at the James W. Cownie Soccer Park in Des Moines.

Four other Norwalk spring sports teams also competed Thursday, including an eighth straight victory for the unbeaten girls tennis squad.

Warrior soccer team wins thriller

Brown’s game-winning goal moved the Warriors over the .500 mark for the first time this season at 6-5 overall. Brown also converted a penalty kick on the night and Tavin Ferner had one goal and one assist. Caden Endres had one assist as well and goalie Jacob Rueber came up with two saves. The Class 3A 7th-ranked Warriors return to action Monday night, hosting Dallas Center-Grimes in a battle for first place in the Little Hawkeye Conference.

Girls tennis stays unbeaten

The Norwalk girls tennis team defended the home courts with an 8-3 win over Pella, improving to 8-0 overall and 6-0 in the Little Hawkeye. The Warriors went 4-2 in singles play, with wins by Anya Kallenbach (6-3, 6-4), Madison Haskell (3-6, 6-4, 1-0), Ava Johnson (6-0, 6-2), and Katie Larson (6-3, 6-3). Doubles wins were earned by the combos of Haskell and Johnson (6-2, 7-5), Larson and Sami Aagard (6-0, 6-4), Grace Dehmer and Tessa Livingston (6-3, 6-4), and Katie Thielen and Sutton McNelly (7-5, 6-3). The Warriors will try to wrap up an undefeated conference dual season today at Indianola.

Girls track 5th at Carlisle

The Norwalk girls track team placed fifth out of 13 schools at the Carlisle Wildcat Relays, scoring 72 points. Urbandale won the meet with 139. The Warriors’ lone gold medal was earned by the shuttle hurdle relay quartet of Kate Desmond, Keara Arnold, Chloe Martin and Shae Ung in 1:08.51. Desmond placed second in the 100-meter hurdles and Bailey Birmingham took second in the 400 hurdles. Season-best times were put on the board by the second-place distance medley and 4×100 relays and the third-place 4×200. The Warrior girls will compete in the Drake Relays’ 4×100 and shuttle hurdle relays on Saturday.

Girls soccer, boys tennis teams defeated

Also competing Thursday were the Norwalk girls soccer and boys tennis teams. The Class 2A 13th-rated soccer girls lost 8-0 at Class 3A No. 2 West Des Moines Valley, falling to 7-4 on the year. Their next match is Monday night at Winterset. The boys tennis team was shut out by Pella 11-0 and is now 6-3 overall and 5-1 in the Little Hawkeye Conference. They host Indianola today at 3:00 p.m. Pella won the LHC dual title at 7-0.
