The Pella Christian girls soccer team cruised past Central Iowa United Monday night for a 9-1 home victory, while the Class 1A #9 ranked boys soccer team lost 3-1 on the road at Class 2A #12 ranked Chariton.
Outshooting Central Iowa United 22-3 in shots on goal, the Eagle girls had six different players score goals in the game. Lexi Terpstra got the scoring started early with assist from older sister Joslyn in the game’s fourth minute, only for the roles to be reversed three minutes later. Carly Huyser then added her first goal of the season in the 21st minute on an assist from Joslyn to give Pella Christian a 3-0 lead at halftime. Lexi started the second half scoring in the 56th minute on a Jenna Edel assist, before Metje Michmershuizen netted her first goal of the season in the 63rd minute. Esther Ford added unassisted goals in the 67th and 75th minutes, while Jenna and Joslyn added two more goals in the 73rd and 76th minutes. The Eagles improved 9-4-1 on the season, and head coach Mike Buchheit’s career record got over .500 for the first time in his career at 68-67-1 with the win.
In a battle of ranked teams at Chariton’s Northwest Park, the Pella Christian boys hung tough with the Chargers but couldn’t get the equalizing goal down the stretch. Chariton held a 1-0 advantage at halftime, but the Eagles responded after the break. Despite the Chargers adding another goal, Camden Parker found the back of the net on an assist from Jack Fancher to keep Pella Christian within striking distance. With time running out, Chariton put the game away on a penalty kick goal with 28 seconds left to drop the Eagles record to 5-7 on the spring.
Both of the Pella Christian soccer teams return to the pitch tonight with a home doubleheader against Oskaloosa. The Eagle girls kick-off the twinbill with their game at 5:30 p.m., with the boys contest to follow at approximately 7:15 p.m.
