A hectic day full of twists and turns didn’t phase the Class 1A #10 ranked Pella Christian girls tennis team, as they swept both Centerville and Clarke in the first and semifinal rounds of the Regional Team Tournament on Saturday.

Parents stepped up to help prepare the courts on Eagle Lane for play after early morning rain, and following a 90-minute delay, play got underway. Opening the day against Centerville at 10:30 a.m., the Eagles breezed to the 5-0 sweep. Pella Christian’s five wins came in the #1-#5 spots in the singles lineup from Katy Roose (6-0, 6-2), Claire Vander Molen (6-0, 6-0), Sydney Van Arendonk (6-1, 6-0), Laurey Johnson (6-1, 6-3), and Rachel Lanferman (6-1, 6-1). Reagan DeVries was up in her #6 singles match 6-0, but the second set went unfinished with the match already won.

The Eagles then met up with Clarke in the semifinals, and the match was anything but ordinary. In Pella, the match was halted twice by tornado warnings in the area and heavy rainfall made the courts unplayable. As a result, the call was made and the two teams traveled to Pleasant Hill at roughly 4:30 p.m. to finish the match at Southeast Polk. Once play resumed, Pella Christian capped off a memorable day by sweeping the Indians 5-0. The victories came from Roose (6-1, 6-0) at #1 singles, and Van Arendonk (6-0, 6-1), Johnson (6-1, 6-1), Lanferman (6-4, 7-5), and DeVries (6-1, 6-0) at #3-6.

The Eagles improved to 10-2 on the season, and they will compete for a spot at State on Eagle Lane on Tuesday at 1 p.m. against cross-town rival Pella in the Class 1A Region 4 Final match.
