Pella Girls Advance to Tennis Showdown with Eagles for State
The #7 in 1A Pella girls tennis team made short work of their opponents in the opening rounds of the team regional playoffs Saturday, defeating Chariton 5-0 and Oskaloosa 5-1. The Dutch had a perfect sweep of the Chargers in the opener, not dropping a single set, while their only loss on the day came in #2 singles in the rematch with Oskaloosa — and no doubles competitions were needed, as postseason tennis matches end when the best of nine conditions are met.
For the third season in a row, the Tulip City showdown renews with a state quarterfinals bid on the line Tuesday on Eagle Lane. The teams have split in the round of 16 over the past two seasons, and Pella won the regular season matchup in a close back-and-forth contest 7-4 over the #9 in 1A Eagles.
Ranked Soccer Teams Split Saturday Doubleheader
It was split fortunes for the ranked Pella soccer teams as their regular season draws to a close, with the #5 in 2A girls winning 5-0 over Roosevelt and the #12 in 3A boys falling to #9 Norwalk 3-0 Saturday morning. A four-goal performance by Abby Warner headlined a strong final game of the regular calendar for the Dutch girls, who finish at 12-2 before the postseason begins on May 23rd against an opponent to be determined. Haley Van Houweling added six saves and Lizzie Neumann added another goal.
Pella’s boys were unable to match the recent heights of their recent winning streak against the Warriors, with a 13th minute defensive error allowing Norwalk to score the first goal, which set the tone for the remainder of the contest, according to Head Coach Mark Solomon. The Dutch host #3 in 3A Marion Monday in the regular season finale.
Pella Boys Golfers Seeking Spoiler Role at District Meet
There’s no place like home — at least, that’s the mentality of the Pella boys golf team as they head into the state qualifying meet Monday. The Dutch boys are in a field with nine other teams at Bos Landen with the opportunity to return to back-to-back state meets. Pella will have to find a way to topple the likes of Knoxville — who have Class 3A’s 3rd best scoring average and Washington, who is ranked 10th best, and also move past Williamsburg (338.49) and Oskaloosa (341.78), who have slightly better 18-hole averages than the green and white (342.75). Hear an interview with the Pella boys golfers here. Competition begins Monday morning at Bos Landen.
