Pella Baseball Wins Opener Over PCM
It was far from smooth, but the Pella Dutch baseball team held PCM without a hit in a 12-2 victory on opening day Monday. Pella had just six hits of their own, but nine walks that led to a dozen tallies, while Pella issued eight walks and committed two errors that allowed the Mustangs to get on the board without a clean single to their name. Tate Weesner opened with a 2-for-4 performance at the plate, and joined Joe Bokhoven with three runs batted in each. Nathan Carey navigated seven walks issued to strike out seven for an opening day victory on the mound with four innings of work. Pella hosts Bondurant-Farrar this evening; PCM is off until a trip to Newton Wednesday.
Dutch Golf Season Ends at Deep District
A fairly strong performance at their home course wasn’t enough for the Pella boys golf team to join the state’s elite this spring, as the Dutch placed 4th at the Class 3A district site at Bos Landen Monday. Pella’s 337 was behind meet champions Williamsburg and runners-up Knoxville, and Washington missed a state spot of their own at 328. Cade McGinley came up just a shot short of an individual state bid, tying for third with a 78 score, and AJ Hoekstra was the tied for the ninth best individual at 80. Cole Floden (88) and Luke Naig (91) rounded out the score card. The Dutch say farewell to senior Luke Keitges.
Boys Soccer Hangs Tough Against Marion, Falls in Double OT
A spirited defensive effort to hold one of Class 3A’s top scorers in check gave the #12 in 3A Dutch soccer team a chance to knock off #3 Marion, but it was the Wolves who earned a double overtime win 1-0. The undefeated road team had held all opponents scoreless this year, and Pella couldn’t change that despite several strong chances — but the Dutch defense worked hard to contain Jackson Kirsch, who tallied 63 goals (or roughly four per match) in 2023, and kept him scoreless for the duration. The 8-6 Dutch await the postseason.
