The Norwalk girls tennis team ended their season in the regional dual finals Tuesday while the baseball team suffered a 6-0 setback vs. Waukee.
Girls tennis finishes 12-1
The Warrior tennis girls were at Crossroads Park in West Des Moines for the Class 2A, Region 4 Team Tournament. The day began with a thrilling 5-4 semifinal win against Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln that came down to a marathon final match. Norwalk went 3-3 in singles play, getting wins in the fourth, fifth and sixth positions from Katie Larson (6-4, 6-4), Sami Aagard (6-0, 6-1), and Grace Dehmer (6-3, 6-1).
The Warriors then won two of three doubles matches, including a 6-0, 6-3 victory from the No. 3 duo of Aagard and Dehmer. The dual outcome came down to the No. 2 doubles match, where Kelsey Dammeier and Larson ultimately prevailed in a long third-set tiebreaker, winning 6-1, 2-6 (16-14).
Norwalk was defeated in the regional final 5-0 by top-seeded West Des Moines Valley. Aagard’s singles match went to a third-set tiebreaker and Larson won her opening set 7-6 (11-9) before the match was halted when Valley clinched the dual victory. The Warrior girls finished a remarkable 2023 season with an overall record of 12-1.
Baseball shut out by Waukee
The Norwalk baseball squad fell to 1-1 on the season following a 6-0 home loss to Waukee, which was playing its season opener. The game was tight until the sixth, when Waukee plated five runs to pull away.
CJ Davis had the only base hit of the night for Norwalk, which struck out 12 times as a team. Davis also took a hard-luck loss on the mound, allowing two hits and one run in five quality frames.
The Warriors play their third of four games this week when they host Boone tonight at 7:30.
