The Homestead Tax Exemption for people over the age of 65 is new legislation that was just passed.

Marion County Assessor Kelli Kingrey said we have the regular Homestead Credit which anyone can apply for if you own and live in a home and it’s your primary residence at least six months out of the year. Kingery tells KNIA/KRLS the credit is the amount that comes off the bottom of your taxes.

Kingrey says, “This new law that has passed, is actually a Homestead Exemption, which is different from a credit. What it does, it exempts out a certain amount of taxable value.”

Kingrey said her department doesn’t have much direction from the state yet. According to Kingrey the law has been passed but they aren’t sure what they need to do to implement it.

At this point people are being encouraged to call the Assessor’s Office at the courthouse. There is a form to fill out and it must be done by July 1st.

The number at the Assessor’s Office is 641-828-2215. Call with any questions concerning the new law. The Assessor’s Office will also assist people to fill out the new Homestead Exemption form as well.
