Simpson College is the host of the track and field events for the annual Veterans Affairs Golden Age Games, an annual event hosted by the US Department of Veterans Affairs as part of a program to help keep veterans active and healthy.
The Golden Age Games host veterans over the age of 55 to compete in multiple activities, ranging from kickball, badminton, and track and field which was hosted at Buxton Stadium on the Simpson College campus. Golden Age Games Local Coordinator Joni Osmundson tells KNIA News the main goal of the event is to encourage veterans to lead an active lifestyle, but another benefit is seeing the bonding and friendships formed by participants.
“They bring a lot of energy, they bring a lot of camaraderie. Even though they are competing against each other from different states, you see a lot of friendships formed. They are so excited to see each other, and they cheer each other on even if they are considered a competitor. It really is an amazing event to see with veterans, because the camaraderie is real and palpable when you are here.”
The event continues today and tomorrow at Simpson College. For more information, tune in to today’s Let’s Talk Indianola.
