A fantastic run through the Class 1A Girls Tennis State Doubles Tournament ended for Pella Christian’s Katy Roose and Sydney Van Arendonk on Saturday with a runner-up finish, while the Eagles softball team went 2-0 at the Williamsburg Tournament.
Opening Saturday’s action in the semifinal round of the State Tennis Tournament at Waterloo’s Byrnes Park Tennis Center, Roose and Van Arendonk took down Oskaloosa’s Presley Blommers and Lucy Roach 7-5, 6-3 to advance to the Championship. The magical run for the unseeded Eagles seniors would unfortunately come up short of winning a State Title, as they fell to Assumption’s Ella DiIulio and Helen Sons 6-2, 6-2.
In Williamsburg, the Pella Christian softball team was dominant on the day with a 9-0 win over English Valleys and a 14-2 win over Wapello. Emma Eekhoff gave up just two runs (one earned), five hits, and four walks while striking out 14 in 11 innings pitched to nab both wins in the circle. At the plate, Eekhoff was 4-for-5 on the day with four RBIs, while Emri Agre was 4-for-6 in the two games. Claire Westerkamp posted three RBIs in the win over English Valleys, and Brynn Roozeboom recorded three RBIs and a home run in the victory against Wapello. The Eagles softball squad improved to 4-1 on the season, and they are back in action on Tuesday for a single game at Albia.
