With Iowa’s Heat Awareness Day approaching and several warm days in the forecast short-term, the National Weather Service reminds the public of the dangers of extended heat waves. Warning Coordination Meteorologist Chad Hahn with the National Weather Service reminds everyone to take precautions when it comes to the hot, humid days on the horizon — including regular hydration, avoiding excessive work for long periods of time, and rest in shade or air conditioning. Hahn says heat has particularly adverse effects on vulnerable populations, including infants, young children, pregnant women, the elderly, and those with chronic illness. It is never safe to leave a child or pet in a locked car, especially on warmer summer days, where heat stroke can occur in as little as ten minutes. Read more about staying safe in the heat here.
