With two of their five Little Hawkeye Conference games this week in the books, the Pella Christian baseball and softball teams continue league play tonight with single games at Newton.
The Eagles baseball squad swept Oskaloosa Monday night to surpass last season’s win total, using excellent pitching and timely hitting to start the season 11-3 overall and 4-2 in the conference. Meanwhile, the Cardinals have slumped since starting the season 4-1, sitting at 5-6 overall and 1-5 in the Little Hawkeye. While it’s been a great start to the season for Pella Christian, senior Lincoln Vander Molen says they need to stay focus and build on what they’ve already accomplished.
“It’s always fun to play winning baseball, obviously baseball is a great sport but it’s always a better time when you take the wins. And we’ve gotten off to a great start here, but that doesn’t mean everything. We still gotta keep going out there, keep making plays, and keep playing winning baseball.”
The Pella Christian softball team enters tonight’s contest looking to get their season back on track. The Eagles started the summer 4-1 but have dropped nine straight games, falling to 4-10 overall and 0-6 in conference action. Newton is also hoping to turn things around as they have lost four of the last five contests and sit at 6-5 overall and 2-3 in the league.
Hear more from Vander Molen and fellow baseball senior Corbin Westerkamp on this week’s Radio Sports Page tonight at 6 p.m. and Thursday morning at 10 a.m. First pitch for the Pella Christian softball game at Newton tonight is scheduled for 7:15 p.m., with the Eagles baseball game at Newton set to begin 15 minutes later at 7:30 p.m.
