The Pella Christian baseball and softball teams started their second run through Little Hawkeye Conference play on the wrong note Wednesday night, as both squads were swept in a road doubleheader at Grinnell.

The Eagles baseball team came out on the wrong end of a 4-3 decision in the first game of the twinbill, before dropping the nightcap 6-2. Corbin Westerkamp struck out 10 in the complete game loss as the starter in game one, allowing just one earned run on five hits and four walks. Lincoln Vander Molen suffered the loss in game two, throwing 5.2 innings and allowing five runs on nine hits and a walk while recording seven strikeouts. Luke Fynaardt, Johnson Morgan, and Westerkamp posted Pella Christian’s three RBIs in the two games, as the Eagles dropped 12-8 overall on the season and 5-7 in the conference.

On the softball diamond, Pella Christian fell in game one of the doubleheader against the Class 3A #15 ranked Tigers 13-0 in three innings, before falling 2-0 in the second game. Maddy Van Zee recorded the lone hit in the first game for the Eagles, while also taking the loss in the pitching circle. Van Zee added two singles in the nightcap, giving her three of Pella Christian’s five hits in the doubleheader. Brynn Roozeboom contributed a double in the second game, while Emma Eekhoff had a single and took the game two loss as the pitcher. The Eagles fell to 6-16 overall and 2-10 in the league with the losses.

The Pella Christian baseball and softball teams will jump out of conference tonight, before returning to league play on Friday. The Eagles summer sports teams compete at Knoxville this evening at 7:30 p.m. The baseball contest can be heard live on 95.3 KNIA with Derek Cardwell on the play-by-play. The softball game can be heard live on 92.1 KRLS with Tyler Crabb and Wynne Veenstra on the call. Pregame coverage for both broadcasts is scheduled for 7 p.m.
