Pella senior Caleb Stewart and sophomore Nathan Carey pitched complete-game gems on Wednesday night, leading the Dutch to a doubleheader baseball sweep at Norwalk by scores of 8-1 and 5-0. Game two was streamed live on kniakrls.com (KNIA3).
Pella struck out just four times in the two games combined, issued no walks – although they did hit four batters – and committed only two errors. Coach Jesse Jablonski tells KNIA-KRLS Sports that it’s been awhile since the Dutch have been able to take both ends of a doubleheader in Norwalk, and he’s proud of their effort.
“Our guys really showed up tonight and played just really good, solid fundamental baseball all night,” Jablonski said. “I thought both of our pitchers – Caleb Stewart and Nathan Carey – threw outstanding games. We played really good defense behind them and our hitters up and down the lineup – over the last week or so – have really stepped up their production.”
Pella took control of game one with a four-run third inning and added a three-spot in the fifth to win 8-1. Carey led the offense with two doubles and three RBI. Anderson Schirm and Lake Cowman both added a single and two RBI. Stewart struck out eight batters in seven innings, allowing seven hits.
Norwalk’s DJ Harris took the loss in game one but had a nice game at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double and the team’s only run-batted-in.
Carey, now 3-0, was lights out in game two, pitching a three-hit shutout and showing great command of his four-pitch arsenal. He struck out four and retired 13 of the last 14 batters he faced. Carey was also 2-for-2 with a walk at the plate. Kellan Shull and Schirm both had run-scoring hits in the top of the first and Cowman added an RBI single in the third.
Caleb Ochanpaugh, Payton Nichols and Jackson Campbell all singled for Norwalk. Briley Purcell took the loss, allowing five hits and four costly walks in five innings of work.
Pella improved to 13-7 overall and 8-3 in the Little Hawkeye Conference. Norwalk is now 5-15 overall and 3-8 in league play. Both teams are off today but return to action Friday night. The Dutch travel to Newton and the Warriors host Oskaloosa.
