Andrew DeWall threw a complete game shutout only giving up two hits to the Eagles of Pella Christian as the Indianola baseball team won 4-0 on the road Friday evening in a game heard live on 94.3 KNIA.

The Indians scored three runs in the first despite getting only one hit, taking advantage of multiple walks and hit-by-pitch passes, with Bennett Brueck getting an RBI double. That score held, as both DeWall and Eagles pitcher Grant Kelderman were dominant on the mound. The Indians would add another run in the sixth on an RBI sacrifice fly by Luke Rockhold, and Pella Christian threatened in the fourth and fifth innings but were unable to get any runs in.

Indians head coach Jon Fitzpatrick tells KNIA Sports the Indians were swept by Pella Christian in their first matchup, and that was a wake-up call to start playing the way they did on Friday.

“I think that was the end of the road of the way that we were playing at that time, we were averaging I think about 3.5 errors per game going into that doubleheader, and since that time we have played really good baseball and it’s been and was tonight on the defensive end.”

Pella Christian head coach Chris Fynaardt tells KNIA Sports while Friday was not the result they were looking for, they played extremely well and can be happy with their effort against the Indians.

“Three games against Indianola this year, one of the better teams in class 4A, and we gave up a total of eight runs in three games this year. We typically give up eight runs every game against them if you go back and look at the history. So we played well, we are getting there, just need to clean up some things.”

Brueck had the only multi-hit day for either team going 2-3 with an RBI, while DeWall picked up the win on the mound striking out 12. Kelderman took the tough luck loss despite pitching a complete-game striking out seven.

The Indians improve to 16-7 and 9-3 in the Little Hawkeye Conference, and plays a doubleheader vs Pella on Monday. Pella Christian is now 12-9 and 5-8, and plays Dallas Center-Grimes in a pair of games on Monday.
