Norwalk’s summer sports teams won three out of four games at Newton Monday night. The Class 4A seventh-ranked Warrior softball team earned a doubleheader sweep, winning 5-2 and 11-0 to improve to 19-4 overall and 12-2 in the Little Hawkeye Conference. The baseball teams split their twin bill. Newton prevailed 11-5 in game one and Norwalk took the nightcap 8-6. The Warriors are now 7-16 overall and 5-9 in league play.
Zadie Wadle and Olivia Dougherty combined to strike out 22 Cardinals on the softball diamond. Wadle pitched a complete game five-hitter in game one, striking out 14 and issuing no walks. The Warriors led 3-0 after two innings, adding two insurance runs in the sixth and holding on for the victory. Nyah Hulbert went 3-for-4 with a double, two stolen bases and two runs scored to lead Norwalk at the plate. Jaylynn Brandt added two hits and two RBI and Wadle was 2-for-4 with a double.
Dougherty pitched a two-hit shutout in the nightcap with eight Ks and no walks, and the offense erupted late with a seven-run top of the seventh. Hulbert, Lauren Black, Addie Fisher and Kaylee Cary all had two-hit games, including a home run by Cary, who scored three runs and had three RBI. Black drove in four.
DJ Harris led the Norwalk baseball team in game one, going 2-for-3 with a walk. Cole Wardlow singled and drove in two runs. Harris and Gabe Johnson both pitched three innings, with Harris taking the loss.
In game two, the Warriors trailed 3-0 after one inning and 4-2 after three, but scored the next six runs and held on for the 8-6 win. Harris had another big game at the plate, going 3-for-3 with two doubles. CJ Davis homered and drove in three runs while Payton Nichols and Aidan Kane both hit a double. Briley Purcell pitched 5 ⅔ innings for the win and Aidan Harder recorded the final two outs for the save.
Both Norwalk squads return to action Wednesday night at Indianola. The varsity softball game will have conference championship implications as the Warriors and Indians are currently part of a three-way tie for first place with Dallas Center-Grimes.
