The Pella and Indianola softball teams split a doubleheader Monday evening, Indianola dominating game one 7-0, but Pella scoring a massive upset over #6 Indianola 4-0 in the nightcap as heard live on 94.3 KNIA.
The Indians won game one with Izzie Benge throwing six shutout innings as the homeruns began to pile up, with Kiley Kindelspire, Tessa Gripp, and Kyra Robins hitting solo shots to build a 3-0 lead. Jordan Gripp drove in three more on a groundout and a double, with Katie Fosenberg hitting an RBI single to get to the final tally. Elah Heimstra went 2-3 for Pella.
Game two was a dominant start from Kiki Riggen in the circle for the Dutch however, as she quieted in the Indians bats allowing only four hits, going the complete game on just 71 pitches striking out three. Katie Scheckel hit a two-run bomb to get Pella out in front in the first, as Indianola couldn’t mount any offense just getting one hit through the first four innings. Ava Curry hit a solo homerun in the fifth, and Scheckel added another RBI double in the sixth. The Indians had their only offensive rally in the fifth as they took advantage of an error to load the bases, but a Kindelspire fly-out to right ended the rally.
Indians head coach Stacy Evans tells KNIA Sports the Indians can’t play like that if they want to succeed come the end of the season, and they just weren’t patient enough at the plate in order to get the offense they needed.
Indianola is now 19-7 and 12-2 in conference and plays tomorrow hosting Norwalk. Pella is now 8-15 and 3-11, and hosts DCG tomorrow.
