The Warren County Democratic Party has submitted their petition to force a special election for the position of Warren County Auditor, after gathering 3,494 signatures, well above the required 2,384 needed.

The Warren County Board of Supervisors selected Republican David Whipple to serve as Interim Warren County Auditor in a special meeting held earlier this month replacing former Warren County Auditor Democrat Traci Vanderlinden, who retired earlier this summer. The board selected Whipple over current Deputy Auditor Kim Sheets, who was the recommendation of Vanderlinden before leaving office.

According to the Iowa Secretary of State website, special elections to fill vacancies may be held on any Tuesday except for the four Tuesdays before and after the primary and general elections and provided sufficient notice is given to the county auditor. If called, the special election will fill the term through 2024, and the position will have a new four-year term up for election in November of 2024.
