A Perry man is in custody after he led the Iowa State Patrol and other agencies on a chase Sunday morning. Sgt. Alex Dinkla with the Iowa State Patrol tells KNIA/KRLS News a state trooper stopped a vehicle at approximately 8:30 a.m., operated by Marco Ortiz-Navarijo, 21, for allegedly going 110 miles per hour on Highway 163 in Mahaska County. As the trooper approached his car and had a brief conversation, Ortiz-Navarijo took off.
A pursuit followed with assistance from the Mahaska County Sheriff’s Office on Highway 163, with speeds exceeding 100 MPH in Marion County and past Pella. From there, the Marion County Sheriff’s Office provided assistance, and Deputy Joshua Boone successfully deployed stop sticks near 150th Avenue. A felony traffic stop was eventually made, where Ortiz-Navarijo was subsequently arrested.
Dinkla reports that Ortiz-Navarijo was charged with eluding, assault on persons in certain occupations with intent of injury, and attempting to disarm a peace officer — all Class D felonies, as well as operating while intoxicated – second offense, driving while revoked, and tampering with an interlock ignition device. He was booked into the Mahaska County Jail.
