The Norwalk baseball and softball teams both celebrated Senior Night with Little Hawkeye Conference wins over Grinnell on Monday. The Class 4A fifth-ranked Warrior softball team used a late surge to topple the 3A No. 14 Tigers 5-1 and sweep the three-game season series. The Warrior baseball squad prevailed 6-5 in eight innings on Aidan Kane’s walk-off RBI single.

The softball game was tied 1-1 until Norwalk plated the go-ahead run in the fifth and added a three-run sixth, improving to 22-6 overall and 15-3 in the Little Hawkeye. The Warriors remain tied for first place with Dallas Center-Grimes with three conference games remaining.

Nyah Hulbert and Jaylynn Brandt both went 2-for-4 at the plate for Norwalk, Zadie Wadle and Grace Dehmer doubled and Addi Downe hit a triple. Hulbert and Maddie Gullion combined for four of the team’s six stolen bases. Wadle pitched six innings of three-hit ball for the win, notching 10 strikeouts. Olivia Dougherty pitched a scoreless seventh and struck out the side.

After stranding two runners in scoring position in the bottom of the seventh, the Norwalk baseball team did not miss their opportunity in the eighth. Payton Nichols led off the inning with a single, Aidan Harder bunted pinch-runner Holdyn Havick to second base and Kane’s single to center ended the game.

The Warriors, who lost a pair of 5-4 games at Grinnell on June 9, picked up their first win of the season in a one-run game, improving to 8-19 overall and 6-12 in the Little Hawkeye.

Norwalk seniors recognized along with their parents Monday night included softball players Wadle and Kaylee Cary and baseball players Gabe Johnson, Jackson Campbell, Aidan Kane, DJ Harris, Ashton Stream and Ian Fisher.

The Warrior softball team steps out of the conference tonight for a top-10 showdown at 4A ninth-ranked Winterset at 7:30 p.m. The baseball team returns to action Wednesday for a 5:30 varsity doubleheader at Pella Christian. Game two will be streamed live on kniakrls.com (KNIA3).
