It was a Tuesday night split for the Pella baseball and softball teams as they stepped outside of the Little Hawkeye Conference during the final full week of the 2023 regular season; the Dutch girls won 11-1 in five innings over North Mahaska at home, while the baseball boys fell 6-3 to North Polk in Alleman.
At home, Pella made short work of the visiting Warhawks, scoring in four of the five frames. Katie Scheckel was 3-for-4 with two runs batted in, and Kyara Riggen and Elah Heimstra each had multiple runs batted in as well. Riggen and Avery Parks each gave up just one hit in splitting the five innings in the circle. The Dutch softball team improves to 11-17 overall.
The Pella baseball team couldn’t hang on against the Class 3A #3 Comets. Pella scored two in the first inning and held a 3-1 lead after the top of the 3rd. North Polk took advantage of Dutch errors in the bottom of the 3rd to take a 4-3 lead. Pella stranded eight runners on base in the effort. Caleb Stewart and Kellan Shull each had two hits for the Dutch and Nathan Carey drove in all three runs. Pella falls to 18-11.
The boys and girls of both teams celebrate senior night in between games in a varsity doubleheader that starts at 5:30 this evening against Grinnell.
