Norwalk starting pitchers CJ Davis and Briley Purcell combined to allow just one run in 13 innings on Wednesday night, leading the Warrior baseball team to a doubleheader sweep at Pella Christian. Norwalk won the first game 6-2 and took the nightcap 3-0 in a game heard live on kniakrls.com (KNIA3).

Davis set the tone in game one, allowing three hits and one unearned run in six innings. He issued two walks and struck out nine. Purcell was even tougher in game two, pitching a two-hit shutout with 11 strikeouts, no walks and one hit batter in seven frames.

Norwalk coach Chad Wiedmann tells KNIA-KRLS Sports that Davis and Purcell both executed all of their pitches with great command and kept a potent Eagles lineup off balance. The Warriors completed a 3-0 season sweep of Pella Christian and moved up to fifth in the Little Hawkeye Conference standings, improving to 10-19 overall and 8-12 in league play. Wiedmann is pleased to see his squad put together their first three-game winning streak of the season.

“It’s happening at the right time of year to get a little confidence going into the tournament,” he said. “We’re heading in the right direction and it can’t happen at a better time.”

Pella Christian finishes the regular season at 15-16 overall and 7-14 in the Little Hawkeye. Caleb Van Arendonk drove in both Eagle runs in the first game, going 2-for-4. Johnson Morgan was 2-for-3 with a double and scored a run while Eliot Menninga added a pair of singles. Lincoln Vander Molen went the distance on the mound and took the loss.

In game two, Simon Belzer and Corbin Westerkamp both singled for Pella Christian’s only hits. Relief pitcher Luke Fynaardt escaped a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the fourth and worked four hitless innings to keep the Eagles close.

Norwalk’s Cole Wardlow, Payton Nichols, DJ Harris and Caleb Ochanpaugh all had run-scoring hits in game one, including doubles by Nichols and Ochanpaugh. The Warriors followed up a three-run fourth inning with two runs in the fifth.

Davis went 2-for-3 with a walk, two stolen bases and a run scored in game two. The Warriors had just four hits but took advantage of seven walks, two hit batsmen and three Eagle errors.

Norwalk returns to action Friday night, wrapping up conference play at the Pella Dutch. Pella Christian will have a week off before hosting Centerville or Cardinal in Class 2A district play on Wednesday, July 5.
