While recent rains will help and more relief is on the way, the U.S. Drought Monitor Report shows rapidly intensifying drought has spread to south central Iowa. Their latest weekly report shows the majority of Marion and Warren Counties now in moderate drought conditions, with northeastern Marion remaining abnormally dry. The cutoff for rain data in the weekly report is Tuesday, so the 1/2 to 2″ of rain that fell on the north side of a system that caused a derecho in southern Iowa was not included in the weekly update. Here are the totals from yesterday’s (6/29) storms:
Pella (KNIA/KRLS ) 1.06″
Knoxville (KNIA/KRLS) – 1.79″
Indianola – .66″
Dutchman’s Landing – 1.9″
Red Rock Marina – 1.7″
Lake Red Rock – 1.01″
Ackworth – 1.4″
Pleasantville Y – 1.2″
Several chances for additional rain are in the forecast today through Sunday morning across south central Iowa, according to the National Weather Service.
