A low-scoring Class 2A Substate 7 opening round game at Des Moines Christian went the way of the PCM baseball team Saturday, as they outlasted Colfax-Mingo for a 2-0 victory.
The pitching for both the Mustangs and Tigerhawks was lights out throughout the night, producing 13 scoreless half innings and only allowing two combined hits in the contest. PCM’s offense managed to sneak out two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to grab the win. Gavin Fenton produced the Mustangs only hit of the night to start the inning and scored the first run of the game a batter later on a Tigerhawk error off the bat of Nick Farver. After reaching second base on that error, Farver stole third base before scoring on a passed ball to give PCM a 2-0 lead.
Trenner VanDyke was dominant in his five innings of work on the bump, allowing just a hit and a walk while striking out eight of the 17 batters he faced, but took a no-decision. Zeb Padgett recorded the win in relief, picking up three strikeouts and giving up just one walk in the final two innings.
The Mustangs improved to 13-14 on the season with the win, and they will now take on Class 2A #10 ranked Pleasantville in the Substate 7, District 14 quarterfinals on Wednesday night.
