The Indianola softball team gave up four first inning runs to Winterset in the regional final game Tuesday evening, eventually falling to the class 4A defending champions 6-0 in a game heard live on 94.3 KNIA.
The Indians quickly fell behind 3-0 as the first two batters singled followed by a home run to lead to a 3-0 deficit, before Winterset scored another run to lead 4-0 after the first inning where they batted 10. The Indians offense had no answer to the offspeed pitches from Winterset pitcher Molly Breeding, as they earned only two hits all evening long. The 4-0 score held until late when the Huskies put across two more insurance runs, and the Indians bats could never catch up.
Head coach Stacy Evans tells KNIA Sports despite falling behind the big deficit early, they never gave up, and she trusted the seniors to keep the team in it.
“I’ll go to the seniors and the leadership that they have, and call upon that. The dugout has always been a sharp point for us. It wasn’t them looking at a 4-0 deficit, they were looking at seven innings to get that under control. That’s what I asked them to do, and they did everything they could to keep the energy where it should be, we were just unable to answer.”
Izzy Sloan and Brynn Ortlund had the lone Indians hits. The Indians end the season with a 27-12, and graduate a senior class of five.
