A Class of 2022 Pella High School Graduate died in a training accident while stationed on an Army base in Georgia this week.
Jacob T. “J.T.” Atchison succumbed to injuries suffered following a medical emergency on July 12th at Fort Moore. Atchison was a 19 year old infantryman assigned to Delta Company 3rd Battalion, 47th Infantry Regiment, 197th Infantry Brigade. A press release from the U.S. Army indicates he experienced a medical emergency while participating in a training event. Leadership immediately notified medical services and drill sergeants attempted lifesaving efforts. Atchison was pronounced dead at Martin Army Community Hospital, and an investigation is ongoing to determine the cause.
“We are all deeply saddened by the loss of this outstanding Soldier and send our heartfelt condolences to his family,” said Lt. Col. Josh Horner, commander of 3rd Battalion, 47th Infantry Regiment. “They are in our thoughts and prayers.”
Atchison began Infantry One Station Unit Training (OSUT) on May 12. He was on track to participate in his company’s Turning Green Ceremony on Friday, which symbolizes completion of the basic combat training portion.
“Those who volunteer to defend the nation represent the very best of us,” said 1st Lt. Kyle J. Whittaker, Atchison’s company commander. “The loss of Jacob will be keenly felt by his teammates and the Army, now and in the future.”
While at Pella High School, Atchison was a member of the Pella Football team and an honor roll student, and earned a black belt in Tae Kwon Do at Triumph Martial Arts.
