District 19 State Senator Ken Rozenboom says he has been consistent in his views as it relates to abortion, and was a supporter of the fetal heartbeat bill approved during a special session held Tuesday. Rozenboom was a yes vote on the measure that passed both chambers and restricts nearly all abortions in the state, with some exceptions for rape, incest, and to protect the life of the mother. Rozenboom voted for a nearly-identical bill in 2018 that was ultimately defeated when the Iowa Supreme Court had a split decision in June about its merits, and ultimately prompted the session.

A Des Moines Register poll conducted in March indicated 61% of Iowans support abortion in most cases, but Rozenboom challenges the merits of that number and believes that is not the case in Senate District 19.

“The problems with polls is how it’s worded is somewhat questionable and you tend to get the results you want to get with how you ask questions,” he said. “The other thing I would say is this: I’ve run for reelection the Iowa Senate four times and three of those I’ve had an opponent. I’ve never received less than 60 percent of the vote and I received as high as 72 percent of the vote and my pro-life views contrary to abortion are very well known, so I would say in the district I represent, I would say I’m representing the voice of the people very, very effectively.”

Governor Kim Reynolds signed the bill into law on Friday.
