One of the final bills that passed during the regular Legislative Session this year aimed to provide property tax relief to Iowans, but as cities and counties have learned, it may have impact on their operations. During policy and planning this week, the Pella City Council received initial details about what the new law could mean starting in Fiscal Year 2024-25. The goal for the city will be to bring all levies to the $8.10 maximum rate over time, and the law reduces the operational fund if valuation growth exceeds three percent. Also, several different levies were consolidated to one general fund rate. No official action was taken, however, the council could consider a review of fees for services provided by planning and zoning and community services, franchise fees, and consider potential annexation as revenue alternatives.
