We are up to #7 on the top ten countdown of memorable sports moments for Knoxville. Going into the track and field season, Panthers Junior Thrower Ciara Heffron had a few goals like making the State Meet and possibly qualifying for the Drake Relays. She qualified for both and on April 13th secured her spot by throwing a Blue Standard in the discus of 139 feet three inches, which broke her own school record set just a week earlier. Heffron told KNIA/KRLS Sports she wanted to do well but she was shocked at how well she was doing early on.
Heffron: “I didn’t really know what to expect going into this season. We did a lot of preseason work and Ashlyn and I worked on how to throw. I didn’t really expect to throw this well at this point of the season.”
Heffron ended up setting another school record in the discus later in the season and went on to the Drake Relays where she finished in 3rd place with a throw of 138 feet seven inches. Heffon also placed at state, more on that later in the countdown.
