The #6 story on our countdown of the top 10 moments at Central College this last school year saw the men’s and women’s track and field squads get five All-American performances at the 2023 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships May 25th through May 27th.
Junior Brody Klein was the first athlete to garner All-American honors in Rochester, New York, finishing in fifth place in the decathlon with a two day total of 6,684 points. After the first day of competition, Klein sat in 12th place following season-best marks in the long jump (21 feet, 9.5 inches), shot put (39-3.25) and 400-meter dash (52.01 seconds). Slipping to 14th with just three events remaining, his pole vault of 15 feet, 1 inch moved him into eighth. The junior then posted a 10-foot improvement on his career-best javelin throw (156-6). To bring home the top five finish, Klein beat his previous career best time in the 1500 meter run, finishing the event in four minutes, 37.69 seconds.
Caroline McMartin took six seconds off the school record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, finishing in third place with a time of 10 minutes, 24.39 seconds to claim All-American status in the event. Teammate Megan Johnson also finished as an All-American in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, taking seventh place with a time of 10:36.98. In the men’s steeplechase, Caleb Silver posted a time of 8:55.66 to finish in eighth place and earned All-American honors. The senior edged the ninth place runner by .32 seconds to nab the final All-American slot. Rounding out the All-American efforts for Central was Noah Jorgenson. The junior came in eighth place in the men’s 800 meters finals with a time of 1:53.61.
In the National meet team standings, the Dutch women tied for 31st place, while the Central men tied for 30th.
