White Bass is still considered the primary fish species in Lake Red Rock.

The lake, which is the largest in Iowa and the top fishing spot in Marion County, is a popular destination for anglers all over the state. The large lake is filled with a variety of fish species, but the Iowa DNR indicates white bass along with a white bass hybrid continue to be the most populous.

During the hot part of summer, fishing can tend to slow down a bit, but local Iowa DNR Officer Eric Hoffman says there are still areas where you will be able to catch the white bass.

“Some really good places to go are the marina point and then around the North Overlook Beach if you’re fishing from shore. Some other ways to target those species is if you got access to a boat. Look for areas where seagulls are feeding and those white bass and wipers are chasing bait fish to the surface.”

Crappies, Catfish, and Largemouth Bass are other popular fish species that anglers may encounter while fishing at Lake Red Rock.
