An extended heat wave is impacting south central Iowa through Friday. Heat index values will likely approach and top 110 degrees in the afternoon and evening. The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat warning through Friday, and extended outdoor activities are not encouraged during peak heating hours.
A hot, humid day is still in play Friday, with temperatures in the mid-to-upper 80s expected by kickoff for the 2023 football season for most area teams. Much more seasonal temperatures return by the weekend, with daytime highs in the low-to-mid 80s and overnight lows near 60 in the forecast for most of south central Iowa. Dry conditions are largely expected to continue well into next week as well.
