The Knoxville Police Department wants to remind students of school permit rules and regulations.

It’s that time of year when kids are heading back to school and new drivers will start getting some freedom by being able to drive themselves to school and related activities.

To obtain a school permit, a student must be 14 ½ years old and have completed an Iowa-approved driver education course. They are allowed to drive directly to school or a school activity and back. They can also drive to a location that is not your school of enrollment to participate in an extracurricular activity. This can only occur between the hours of 5:00 am-10:00 pm. 

Knoxville Police Chief Aaron Fuller says they will enforce violations for those who don’t follow school permit rules.

“We have heard lately that a lot of kids with school permits are driving around places they shouldn’t with more kids than they should in the car. If we do catch you catches are you’re going to get a citation and you may not get your driver’s license at 16.”

With a school permit, operators  are not allowed to carry more than one minor passenger in a vehicle without adult supervision.
