While there was not a lot compelling about the points races heading into season championship night at the Knoxville Raceway on Saturday, the three sprint car classes put on a show that lasted into the early morning hours of Sunday due to several red flags and other stoppages as heard live on KNIA. Aaron Reutzel won the final 410 A-Main of the season with a dominating win by over four seconds, while Chas Randall in the 360s, and Kade Higday in the Pro Sprints cemented their respective track titles with wins. The only champion that did not win his class was Austin McCarl. By the time the race started, which took four tries to get a lap in, he had already clinched the title and told KNIA/KRLS Sports he may have lost the battle on this night, but he won the season-long war.
McCarl: “That’s pretty rewarding and we get to go home with a cup. I hope to keep this winning deal a habit. I wish we could have got a faster start in that race, but that’s behind us now, we’re going to enjoy this and just see what the future brings.”
Randall took the lead at the midway point of the 360 feature and cruised to the win. He told KNIA/KRLS Sports, his one focus was to get the 360 track title and it paid off with a cup.
Randall: “Came here with one goal in mind and that was to win a championship. The consistent runs and working like a well oiled machine, I had a bunch of fun this year.”
After five seasons of bad luck and not being able to race consistently, Kade Higday also won the race and track title going away on Saturday. He said in victory lane, winning a track title just like his father Josh did in 2007.
Higday: “Pretty cool. This year has been spectacular, we spent 5-6 years struggling and before that race I told our guys I wasn’t losing that race.”
The next event at the Knoxville Raceway will be the Quick Roofing Flat Track Motorcycle Nationals on Saturday September 9th.
