Central Sets Men’s Golf Record in Kentucky

A sizzling opening day was only the start for Central College’s Harold Dobernecker, who followed it up by matching his career-best score with a 3-under-par 69 to finish fifth in a loaded field at Transylvania (Ky.) Fall Invitational Saturday.

He also helped the Dutch break a 39-year-old 54-hole school team record at 290-296-295—881 to climb to ninth in the competitive 17-team field. The previous Central record of 889 was set in Lincoln, Nebraska in 1984 and tied there in 1992. Playing at the par-72 University Club of Kentucky, Dobernecker carded a 71-70-69—210.  He also shot a career-low 69 on the same course in 2021. That helped lift Central to a ninth-place finish in the 17-team field that includes seven schools receiving votes in the Golfweek Division III Coaches Poll. McDaniel College (Md.) took the title but complete results were not yet available. Dobernecker’s round was bogey-free, with birdies on a pair of par-5s and a par-4. Cole McGriff had the next-best round of the day and finished at 76-77-72—225. John Oltman shot 72-73-76—221, Jacob Moffett had 72-79-78—229 and Blake Wynn  shot 75-76-78—229.

Central is off until Monday, Sept. 11 when the Dutch compete at the 36-hole Carthage (Wis.) Fall Invitational. The tournament will be staged at the par-72 Club at Strawberry Creek in Kenosha, Wisconsin over two days. Central was fifth in a 20-team field there last year.

Biggs Goes Low for Central Women’s Golf Squad

Mackenzie Biggs posted a career-low 72 as the Central College women’s golf team sliced 10 shots off its score at the Kohawk Fall Classic Sunday.

Biggs, whose previous best was a 75 turned in three times, played even-par golf on a sun-baked day at the Pheasant Ridge Golf Course. She tied for third individually at 80-72—152 in the 36-hole tourney. Lydia Grond placed second at 76-75—151. Central finished second in a 12-team field at 320-310—630 while the University of Dubuque took the crown at 312-302—614. Complete results were not yet available. Peyton Bytnar shot 79-81—160 while Avery Woods had 85-82—167 and Rachel Sohn had 85-87–172.

Central is back on the road Wednesday and Thursday for the Siouxland Fall Invitational, a new tournament on the Dutch schedule. The field is comprised primarily of NAIA schools. Wednesday’s round is at Landsmeer Golf Club in Orange City with Thursday’s action at the Ridge Golf Club in Sioux Center.

Central Stands Firm for Women’s Soccer Draw with Hope

Withstanding a barrage of shot attempts from Hope College (Mich.), the Central College women’s soccer team earned a home tie Saturday afternoon.

The Flying Dutch (1-0-1), who defeated Wartburg College 3-1 Friday afternoon, outshot the Dutch (1-0-1) 32-5 with 19 of those shots going on frame. Freshman goalkeeper Zoey Sizemore registered 17 saves. The Dutch struck first with an unassisted Paige Cahill goal in the 11th minute. Hope leveled the score in the 24th minute but Central’s defense held strong for the tie.

Central travels to the University of Northwestern – St. Paul (Minn.) for a 4 p.m. match Wednesday.

Grond Fires 76 for Central Women’s Golf Squad

Springboarding off of last year’s late-season success, Central College junior Lydia Grond fired a 76 and is tied for second after the opening round of the 36-hole Kohawk Fall Classic Saturday.

Competing at the par-72 Pheasant Ridge Golf Course, the Dutch stand second in the 11-team tourney at 320, eight shots back American Rivers foe the University of Dubuque. Wartburg College is third at 323 with host Coe College at 334.

Grond was Central’s No. 5 player a year ago but surged to take medalist honors at the conference tournament. She’s two shots out of first. Central lost three key players from last year’s conference champs, but Peyton Bytnar could be one to help fill the void. She’s tied for eighth at 79. Meanwhile, Mackenzie Biggs shot 80 and Avery Woods and Rachel Sohn each had 85’s.

Sunday’s final round tees off at 9 a.m.

Central Splits Volleyball Matches at Home Tournament

It was a tale of two matches for the Central College volleyball team at its home invitational Saturday as a sweep over Bethany Lutheran College (Minn.) was followed by getting swept against Dominican University (Ill.) in the nightcap.

Central hosts Clarke in a non-conference match Wednesday night at 6 p.m.

Dobernecker Scorches Kentucky Course for Central Men’s Golf Team

Nearly matching the career-best score he shot on the same course a year ago, Central College’s Harold Dobernecker fired a 3-under-par 70-71—141 at the season-opening Transylvania (Ky.) Fall Invitational Saturday.

Playing at the par-72 University Club of Kentucky in a 17-team field that includes seven schools receiving votes in the Golfweek Division III Coaches Poll, Central is tied for 10th at 290-296—586. McDaniel College (Md.) leads with 290-283—573 while No. 18-ranked Greensboro College (N.C.) is second at 289-285—574.

A talented field combined with ideal scoring conditions to produce low numbers. Dobernecker is ninth in the individual standings, six shots out of the lead. He shot a career-best 69 on the course last year. John Oltman followed, birdieing his final hole to finish with a 1-over-par 72-73—145. Blake Wynn shot 75-76—151, Jacob Moffett had 72-79—151 and Cole McGriff had 76-77—153.

The 54-hole tourney concludes with 18 holes Sunday.
