The Simpson College fall sports teams were in action over the weekend, which included several top results.
The Storm men’s and women’s cross country teams both placed first at the Buxton Invitational at Pickard Park in Indianola on Friday. Spencer Moon won his seventh career individual meet, finishing in a blistering career-best time of 17:34.5 at the 6K distance, while Lara Kallem beat her previous best at the 4K distance, set at last year’s meet, by over a minute. She ran a 15:17.8 to claim her second runner-up finish at Storm’s home meet. Both teams next compete Saturday in Grinnell.
Women’s volleyball was in Texas for four games, going 2-2. The Storm defeated Concordia 3-0, and Schreiner 3-2, while falling to Mary Hardin-Baylor and Concordia-Moorhead 3-0. The team now heads to Wisconsin-River Falls for a tournament on Friday.
The Simpson College men’s golf team tied for ninth at its first event of the season, the two-day Highland Championship, hosted by Augustana (Ill.).The Storm tied for ninth out of 16 total teams, shooting a two-day total of 622 (314, 308). Freshman Avin Legg placed 10th for the top finish. They next hit the links this weekend for a two-day tournament.
Simpson men’s soccer split their first two games of the season, defeating Augustana 4-0, but falling to Macalester 4-2. Zach Kline, Ronaldo Ordaz, and Andrew Russell each had two goals coming out the weekend. They next play Friday against Illinois College at home.
The Storm women’s soccer team is 2-0 after a dominating start over the weekend, defeating Illinois Wesleyan 2-0 and Gustavus Adolphus 3-1. Brissa Valadez and Averi Baas scored in the opener, while reigning American Rivers Conference MVP Cassie Nash earned two assists. Nash then scored a hat trick in the second contest. Simpson next plays Wednesday vs Carleton.
Freshman Kaylin Long led the Simpson College women’s golf team to a seventh place finish out of 12 teams at the Kohawk Classic. She placed 15th with a score of 164 over the two-day meet. They next golf this weekend for a two-day tournament.
