As the harvest season is set to ramp up and drought largely intensifies in south central Iowa, the Iowa Department of Agriculture is seeking input from farmers. State Climatologist Justin Glisan says while rain gauges and radar estimates are helpful in determining the status of crops, soil moisture, and the general climate, he says first-hand accounts are also beneficial to help paint a better picture overall. Glisan says his office works with the U.S. Drought Monitor and National Weather Service to better understand conditions in the state, and any reporting of data is useful to his office and to obtain state and federal resources. Much cooler conditions are expected on the horizon, and wetter weather could also be in the picture next week.
